Well thought out, well engineered, quality material, lightweight, and looks great installed if I should say so. I'm spoiled by AEV components (skids, wheels) and their OEM-approved approach. Would like to see an engine skid for the Colorado Trail Boss, or a Trail Boss bumper that would allow the use of AEV's ZR2 engine skid. Not a lot of options on the market for the Trail Boss so I'm currently using something that resemble tank armor up front.

Doesnt the Colorado ZR2 Bison / Canyon AT4X AEV Edition have a radiator skid plate as well?

James H.

Yes, however that skid plate is only compatible with ZR2 Bison and AT4X AEV Front Bumper, therefore it is only available as a service part through the dealership.

Ive heard horror stories of some aftermarket skid plates blocking off airflow or trapping debris. What makes AEV Skid Plates different?

James H.

The difference is in the development, testing and validation that goes into our skid plates. These are not aftermarket skid platesthese are OEM skid plates, developed alongside GM engineers specifically for the ZR2 Bison and AEV Edition programs. We had to follow the same protocols and were subject to all the same testing and validation procedures as any other OEM component would go through.

Is Hot-Stamped Boron Steel really a thing or is it just a marketing gimmick?

James H.

Oh, its really a thing! Hot Stamped Boron Steel is an ultra-high strength, press hardened steel. Hot Stamped Boron Steel is more commonly used in automotive applications for passenger impact protection because it is lightweight with an extremely high yield strength. We first started using this material for the original Colorado ZR2 Bisons OEM skid plate package because of its high strength-to-weight ratio, hardness and resistance to gouging.

Why not use aluminum instead of steel to save weight?

James H.

Aluminum is lightweight and easy to shape, but it is very soft and not nearly as strong as steel. Hot-Stamped Boron Steel is much stronger than aluminum and far more resistant to gouging. Since it is press-hardened and heat-treated, we are able to deliver a product that is both lighter and stronger than any other previously used OEM or aftermarket skid plate manufacturing methods.

AEV Skid Plates for 2023+ Colorado/Canyon are manufactured in Canada.
