AEV’s rear differential skid plate (aka differential slider) is standard equipment for the 2019-22 Colorado ZR2 Bison and is now also available to non-Bison owners! This Hot Stamped Boron Steel skid plate is designed to help you slide over obstacles, instead of having them stop you dead in your tracks. Situations like this can potentially be causing damage to your differential housing or pinion, leaving your vehicle disabled in the middle of nowhere.
While the AEV Rear Differential Skid Plate is standard equipment on the 2019-22 Colorado ZR2 Bison, it was designed for the Dana M220 rear axle found in most 2015-22 Chevy Colorado trucks, including ZR2 and Z71 trim levels. The Hot Stamped Boron Steel construction means that this skid plate is not only super lightweight but also incredibly strong. Complete with hardware, the AEV rear diff skid plate only weighs 9 lbs versus 20 lbs, like our traditionally manufactured JK diff slider. E-coated for maximum corrosion resistance and is proudly made in the USA.
Hot Stamped Boron Steel (HSBS) is an ultra-high strength, press-hardened steel and is most commonly used in automotive applications for passenger impact protection because it is lightweight with an extremely high yield strength (approximately 200,000 ksi vs. mild steel at 25,000 ksi). AEV chose this material for the Colorado ZR2 Bison’s skid plate package not just because of its high strength-to-weight ratio but also for its hardness and resistance to gouging.

Product FAQs
- How did working with GM on the ZR2 Bison impact the design of your skid plates?
It was actually a great learning experience for us, especially since skid plates are not something that we have really explored in much depth prior to the ZR2 Bison. Seemingly "minor details", such as the hardware, flag nuts, attachment points, etc. are all details that became very important as to not jeopardize the structural integrity of the frame.
We also had to take into account the dynamic movements of the engine, transmission and exhaust to ensure everything works in harmony and follow best practices in terms of drainage (not only dirt and mud but also for service drains).
- What is Hot Stamped Boron Steel?
Hot Stamped Boron Steel is an ultra-high strength, press hardened steel. Hot Stamped Boron Steel is most commonly used in automotive applications for passenger impact protection because it is lightweight with an extremely high yield strength (approximately 200,000 ksi vs. mild steel at 25,000 ksi). - Will this skid plate fit my non-Bison 2015-22 Colorado or ZR2?
Absolutely! While this Differential Skid Plate was standard equipment on the 2019-22 Colorado ZR2 Bison, we designed it for all Colorado Z71/ZR2 models with the Dana M220 rear axle.
- Did you do any real world testing?
Yes, the ZR2 Bison was developed and tested on some of the most iconic 4wd trails in the United States where under body protection is a requirement if you want to get home under your own power. On the other side of the 4WD spectrum, our skid plates can also be found on the Hall Racing ZR2 that competes in the Best in the Desert off-road racing series.
- Where are your skid plates manufactured?
All of the ZR2 Bison's skid plates are proudly manufactured in the USA.
