AEV’s Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Tank Skid Plate offers an added level of protection from punctures and other fuel tank related damage while out on the trail. Manufactured from Hot Stamped Boron Steel, this Skid Plate is both lightweight and incredibly strong.
The AEV Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Tank Skid Plate is standard equipment on the 2019-22 Colorado ZR2 Bison, but is also compatible with most 2015-2022 Colorado Z71 and ZR2 models (excluding crew cab w/ 6.5’ bed). Installation of the AEV Fuel Tank Skid Plate also requires AEV’s Transfer Case Skid Plate. E-coated for maximum corrosion resistance and is proudly made in the USA.
Hot Stamped Boron Steel (HSBS) is an ultra-high strength, press hardened steel and is most commonly used in automotive applications for passenger impact protection because it is lightweight with an extremely high yield strength (approximately 200,000 ksi vs. mild steel at 25,000 ksi). AEV chose this material for the Colorado ZR2 Bison’s skid plate package not just because of its high strength-to-weight ratio but also for its hardness and resistance to gouging.
Please note: This part requires the AEV Transfer Case Skid Plate in order to be installed correctly. This part is not compatible with Crew Cab/Long Bed models.

Product FAQs
- How did working with GM on the ZR2 Bison impact the design of your skid plates?
It was actually a great learning experience for us, especially since skid plates are not something that we have really explored in much depth prior to the ZR2 Bison. Seemingly "minor details", such as the hardware, flag nuts, attachment points, etc. are all details that became very important as to not jeopardize the structural integrity of the frame.
We also had to take into account the dynamic movements of the engine, transmission and exhaust to ensure everything works in harmony and follow best practices in terms of drainage (not only dirt and mud but also for service drains).
- What is Hot Stamped Boron Steel?
Hot Stamped Boron Steel is an ultra-high strength, press hardened steel. Hot Stamped Boron Steel is most commonly used in automotive applications for passenger impact protection because it is lightweight with an extremely high yield strength (approximately 200,000 ksi vs. mild steel at 25,000 ksi). - Will this skid plate fit my non-Bison 2017-22 Colorado or ZR2?
Yes, provided you also install AEV's Transfer Case Skid Plate. The Fuel Tank Skid Plate does not fit Crew Cab/Long Bed models.
- Did you do any real world testing?
Yes, the Colorado ZR2 Bison was developed and tested on some of the most iconic 4wd trails in the United States where under body protection is a requirement if you want to get home under your own power.
- Where are your skid plates manufactured?
All of the ZR2 Bison's skid plates are proudly manufactured in the USA.
